Guide
MCP for Claude Desktop: connect Google Sheets and Excel
This guide walks you through connecting a spreadsheet to Claude Desktop with the DataBased MCP server, so Claude can read, analyse and update your data in natural language.
- 1
Connect your spreadsheet to DataBased
Sign in to DataBased and connect a Google Sheet or Excel workbook, or upload a CSV/XLS file. DataBased analyses the structure — columns, types and relationships — and builds a data model your AI tools can query.
- 2
Review the detected data model
Check the schema DataBased detected and adjust column descriptions where needed. Clear descriptions help Claude understand what each column means, which improves the answers you get.
- 3
Copy your MCP server URL
Every DataBased workspace gets a dedicated MCP server URL. You'll find it in your workspace settings. It looks like this:
https://your-workspace.databased.si/mcp
- 4
Add the server to Claude Desktop
Open Claude Desktop's configuration file (Settings → Developer → Edit Config) and add DataBased under mcpServers:
{ "mcpServers": { "databased": { "url": "https://your-workspace.databased.si/mcp" } } } - 5
Restart Claude Desktop and sign in
Restart Claude Desktop. On first use it will ask you to authorise the connection to your DataBased workspace. Once approved, your spreadsheet data is available in every conversation.
- 6
Ask questions about your data
You're set. Ask Claude things like “Which customers haven't ordered in 90 days?” or “Summarise this month's expenses by category” — Claude queries your live spreadsheet through the DataBased MCP server and can write updates back when you ask it to.
What it looks like
Once connected, Claude queries your spreadsheet through the DataBased MCP server mid-conversation:
Common questions
- What is MCP for Claude Desktop?
- MCP (Model Context Protocol) is an open standard that lets AI clients like Claude Desktop connect to external data sources and tools. The DataBased MCP server exposes your spreadsheet data so Claude can read and update it directly.
- Do I need to move my data out of Google Sheets or Excel?
- No. Your data stays where it is. DataBased reads it in place and exposes it through the MCP server — no migration, no copy to maintain.
- Can Claude change my spreadsheet?
- Only if you allow it. Write access is controlled per connection, and DataBased keeps an audit trail of every change an AI client makes.
